In the early days of modeling, mechanistic models for ion exchange chromatography were mostly based on stoichiometric equations. A new adsorption isotherm class was introduced in 2021: the colloidal particle adsorption model (CPA). It is based on a colloidal description of proteins, and, in comparison to the standard steric mass adsorption (SMA) model, it achieves increased accuracy at high column loading.
